We're Max and Alex — the two founders of CAT JOY.

It started in 2021 with Alice, Alex's cat, and a problem every cat owner knows. Every scratcher we bought her crumbled, peeled or sagged within a few months — and most of them looked like something you'd rather hide in a cupboard. Alice, of course, went back to the sofa.

Alex has always worked with wood, so he did what makers do: he built a better one. Dense layered kraft corrugated cardboard, a real wooden facade and a long curved shape a cat actually wants to stretch out on. Max took one look at the first prototype and saw more than a scratcher — a piece of cat furniture people would be proud to keep in the living room. Alice gave her verdict the way cats do: she left the sofa alone.

That's still how CAT JOY works today — in our own workshop in Peterborough, England. Alex looks after how every scratcher is made, checked and packed. Max looks after the design, the brand and every message you send us. Two people, one cat who started it all — and a scratcher built to last.

Kraft corrugated cardboard

We tested 8 suppliers; most sheets crumbled or warped after gluing. We settled on dense British kraft corrugated cardboard — 5 layers, cut and stacked by hand.

Glue

We use a water-based glue — safe for claws and strong enough for years of scratching.

Design

Clean lines, inspired by the products we admire, and a shape that is comfortable to scratch, rest and play on. The wooden facade comes in brown, white or black, so the scratcher fits the room instead of hiding in a corner.

Laser-cut wooden facades in three colours, kraft corrugated cardboard layers cut and stacked for gluing, every scratcher wrapped and boxed by hand in our own workshop in Peterborough — and dispatched from the same place, so nothing is imported.
