Cat Scratch Boards

A cat scratch board is the horizontal alternative to an upright post: your cat stands on it, stretches forward and pulls back through the claws — the same move they make on a rug or the arm of the sofa. Ours are thick, curved boards of dense 5-layer corrugated cardboard with a real wood facade at each end, so the board looks like furniture and stays where you put it. Low enough for a kitten, long enough for a full stretch.

Scratch board, scratch pad or scratching mat?

A cat scratch pad is usually a thin slab of cardboard; a cat scratching mat is a flat sisal or carpet mat for the floor. Both wear through quickly and slide about. A CAT JOY board is a solid block of dense corrugated cardboard: it gives slightly under the claw — the feel cats are after — it does not curl or fray like a thin pad, and it lasts a year or more with one cat. Which cat scratch board?

  • Lounge (59 × 29 cm, 13 cm high) — the kitten scratch board, light enough to move from room to room. Cats up to 4 kg.
  • Snug (70 × 29 cm) — a curved, wave-shaped board that rises at both ends; the one most adult cats up to 6 kg pick. Our bestseller.
  • Pavilion (68 × 29 cm, 20 cm high) — a board with a small tunnel underneath, easy for small and older cats.
  • Terrace (77 × 29 cm) — the long board for a big cat to stretch out full length, with a tunnel below.

Horizontal or vertical? Most cats use both — read horizontal vs vertical cat scratchers. For a Maine Coon or two cats, go bigger: large cat scratchers.

Cat scratch board FAQ

Scratch board or scratching post — which is better?
It depends on how your cat scratches. Cats that stretch up the door frame like a post; cats that drag their claws across the rug or the stair carpet want a horizontal scratch board. Most cats do both.

Will a scratch board stop my cat scratching the sofa?
Usually, if it is in the right place: put the board right next to the arm your cat uses, rub in a pinch of catnip and praise every scratch. More in how to stop a cat scratching furniture.

Which scratch board for a kitten?
Lounge (59 cm) — low and light, for kittens and cats up to 4 kg. When your kitten grows it becomes the spare scratcher in another room. See kitten scratchers.

Do I need replacement scratch pads?
No. Each board has two scratchable faces, so when the top wears you simply flip it — one board lasts twelve months or more with one cat.
